He had never seen the scars until after he had been "rebooted", and then his attitude was much more brisk. He wouldn't ask about them, as she wouldn't ask about his. But sometimes, when she stood in the window and looked out across the property of their home, the moonlight illuminated them in such a way that made them almost glow. It made her almost glow. She looked like a black and white photograph; pale skin contrasted against dark hair.

He would pretend to be asleep until she actually was, and then he would watch her. She was so much more delicate in her sleep, despite knowing that in an instant, she could turn deadly. She was so like a Serpiente, that she had been born human seemed only like an oversight on the part of creation. Of course, Lucien felt less like a true Serpiente every day, but such was the life of a guild leader. Necessary adjustments were made.

Astrid hadn't always been hard, either. He remembered her in his youth, when both of them had been silly, carefree... gentle. None of that, now. Just hardness, swiftness. There was passion that had not been there in childhood, but that was the result of tasting death every day. If either of them really knew what pain they had been spared by Grayson's "hare-brained ideas", there may have been horrible consequences. But they didn't.

They were both ghosts. They just didn't know it.
