Breathe

This thread takes place in the past.

There were some days where Tanith was very sure of herself, of the world around her, and of the things that she needed to do in which to make it throughout the day. Then, of course, there were occasionally those days that left her sitting in a huddled form on her couch clutching a cup of ineffective coffee, wondering where it was she began making bad life decisions. She didn't often hit large bumps in the road that made her want to re-evaluate her life, but that morning as she stepped into the elevator alongside London, she was about to.

"So, that idiot got transfered out of our precinct. I heard they sent her home because she couldn't cut it," London said darkly. It was his way of giving her a cheerful greeting, and Tanith raised her eyebrows as she waited for the doors to shut.

"Yeah? The one you almost ate?" she asked, smiling in spite of herself when he nodded smugly. "Oh, well. I don't think she could have hung around this place long, anyways. We're all a bunch of -- "

The elevator went dark, and then the duo was bathed in a rich red light coming from the emergency lighting.

"....really?" Tanith said. "I knew this was going to be a bad day," she hissed. She sighed and nodded to the doors, looking at London. "See if you can pry them open?" she asked hopefully.

"What? Why do I have to?" he asked, glaring at Tanith.

"Because, moron, I'm a bird. You're a lot stronger than I am," she snapped, stepping out of his way. He was already moving, as he would have, because it wasn't often London refused Tanith anything she requested so long as it wasn't something utterly ridiculous.

"Lies. You just like to see me work," he retorted. He sighed, and then managed to catch a grip on the doors, letting his claws out enough to puncture the steel of the door. It hurt, but he pried them open enough to get his hands in between the metal slabs, wrenching them about a foot apart from eachother. He turned back to Tanith, expression grim.

"No good. We're between floors," he said. He let go of the doors, ignoring the maul marks from his claws at the edges of them, and then leaned against the back wall lazily, shrugging off his coat. It was already getting warm. "God damned stagnant ass air," he commented absently, loosening his tie.

Tanith slumped down next to him, keeping her distance due to the heat exchange, and whipped off her jacket, planting it behind her head. She stretched out and sighed noisily, letting her head thump against the wall. "Oh, London. Can you believe this? We're trapped in the motherfucking elevator. Did you know, I can fly? What the fuck am I even doing in an elevator to begin with?" she said, holding her hands up before tossing them uselessly at her side.

"Beats the Hell out of me. I'm a Jaguar. We're supposed to be in the jungle, which does not include the concrete variety, from what I gleaned off of my son's Encyclopedia Britannica," he said dryly. He sat next to his partner in silence for a while, and then glanced at his Citizen watch. "It's been nearly twenty minutes, and we're still sitting here in the dark," he observed.

Tanith nodded absently, putting her head in her hands. "Yeah," she acknowledged. "I bet we're in a blackout, honestly. Think about it - happens every fucking time 'round this time of year. I swear to God, I'm going to take the stairs from here on out now," she said. She threw her jacket down on the floor and layed down, attempting to use it as a pillow.

London watched her struggle to get comfortable. For the first few moments, it was amusing, but it gradually became less so when she started to flail -- like a damned bird. "I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you don't like closed spaces, do you, Tanith?" he said glibly, watching her struggle on the floor.

She looked back at him over her shoulder, and frowned. "Dad used to lock me in the attic when I was a kid," she said suddenly. "So no, not really. I'll cope, though. I mean, attic, elevator - big difference, you know?" she said. She rolled back over. "I'm taking advantage of this and cashing in on some sleep, though. Getting up at six AM hasn't been working for me for a while, now," she mused.

London watched her, and it actually bothered him that she was just laying there on the floor like that. He clenched his teeth, and then sighed. "Come here, Tanith. Come on, don't look at me like that. You can lean against me, that way you don't have your, ugh, face on the floor." He paused. "You never know what people have on the bottom of their shoes, anyways. Look at the shit we wade through every day," he added.

Reluctantly, Tanith got up and spun around in place, then scooted back over to where he was. It was strange at first, trying to situate herself comfortably. She finally settled in the corner, her legs crossing his own, her knees bent. She leaned to the left, at his shoulder, and silently watched the seconds tick by on his watch as he rested his arm on her chin, tilting his own head back and closing his eyes.

Tanith felt something strange fluttering in her chest. Butterflies? She furrowed her brow, ignoring the scent of her partner. Jaguar - cat, she knew it well. Dark, musky, and irate - if you could call a smell such an adjective. Yes, his scent was usually angry and heavy, but it was one she was so accustomed to, especially since Taran's was not unlike it in many ways. She glanced up at him, surprised to find that he was looking down at her. She hesitated, locked in a staring match with him - but not like the ones they usually had, where eventually she'd have to swerve either for him or her before they struck a pedestrian, parked vehicle, or store front. No, this was different, and they both felt it.

"I think I'd rather stand," she said suddenly. London practically dumped her out of his lap as he stood up, though he did reach down to pull her off of the ground. She took his hand and propelled herself upward, taking a few steps back to the opposite side of the elevator. She folded her arms and stared at the ground, and after a moment or two, stole a glance up at him.

London was staring back at her. She had some sort of accusatory look on her face, and it irritated him. "What?" he snapped, irritated.

She stared, unblinking. Slowly, a smile crept onto her features. "What was that?" she asked. Her tone was... teasing.

"What? Oh, don't flatter yourself. We're trapped in an elevator. You aren't unattractive," he snapped. He folded his arms and looked away from her, glancing back to catch her still staring at him. "What?" he snarled.

"....you wanna date me. You think I'm gorgeous. You wanna kiss me, hug and caress me," she began.

At that moment, the door of the elevator was pried open and a service technician poked his head in. "You kids doing okay in here? We'll have you out in about five minutes!" he said. He vanished into the darkness of the elevator shaft.

"Thank GOD," London shouted, throwing his hands up in the air. "And you, missy," he said, pointing a finger at Tanith, tone threatening, "had better settle down. If not, I'll tell everyone you were putting the moves on me."

Tanith dissolved into fits of loud laughter until she couldn't breathe anymore, and began to double over and gasp for air. London actually worried for a moment, but when she choked herself up with more laughter, he decided to leave her there until she asphyxiated herself.
