Night's Omen

Yeah, Fax definitely wasn't thinking, but that was alright.  Connor took note of the vampire's name in his mind, making certain he'd remember it when he had a pen, and he actually perked up a little at the mention of a job.  Really?  With the police?  That was interesting.  The guilds had to deal with the police rather often, since hunters sometimes ended up arrested, or going after murder suspects. 

"That makes some sense, but a lot of vampires don't have that kind of control.  That means your vamp friend isn't anywhere near a single century old.  Those guys don't hang around blood unless they're eating," he pointed out, once again wondering how old this leech was. 

Poor Fax.  He might have actually gotten himself into trouble, as far as Connor could tell.  "He didn't give you any clues about his age?"

This was certainly puzzling. Connor seemed very intent on discovering Gabriel's age: Fax wondered exactly what sort of import that had in this situation. All right, so younger vampires wouldn't be in control enough to work with blood the way Gabriel evidently did, okay, that he understood...so, he was older...and that was all that mattered, right? As long as they knew that he was older than a century?

Still, Connor really seemed to want to know, so Fax racked his brain, fiddling with his glasses as he frowned vaguely into space. Anything, anything at all that Gabriel had said...they'd covered the Treasure Island bit, he was at least that old...but...what else had he said...? Come on, Fax, focus on last night...not too difficult a task...

"Caribbean!" he blurted abruptly, amazed that he had forgotten about such an intriguing fact until this moment. "He mentioned sailing in the Caribbean! 'Gabriel Sullivan' does have a decidedly British ring to it, doesn't it?" he went on musingly, almost enthusiastic now that he felt he was onto something. "We had some of that area colonised for, what, 300 years?...perhaps he played a role in the trade?"

Why pirates did not cross Fairfax's mind is curious. Possibly it was because he was so determined to see the good in Gabriel, and pirates were, on the whole, generally not regarded as "good".
