Night's Omen

He watched her go, thinking he'd probably never hear from her again and that was sad, but he could deal with it.  Just knowing he'd saved her from the fire made him feel like he'd done something great, and perhaps he was better not knowing what she was trying to do to herself.  He'd have been better off just thinking that he'd given her a second chance, and that she'd take it.  He didn't need to know what she was thinking, really.

When she'd turned around, he smiled, happy to see that she'd stopped to look back at him, and then he got back to work.  He no longer had the excuse of helping a victim to keep the other guys off his back, so he helped them haul the hose in, eager to get home and get a shower.
