H U N T
It was late when Sera finally left work. She'd declined Ronan's offer to stay late; he had massive amounts of Fae bullshit to deal with, and she didn't want him worrying about her. Honestly, she was tired of everyone worrying over her. It was like she was some delicate blown glass
thing and there was this fear that she'd fall and break. She knew, she
knew how critical it was that she take it easy with her magic. Ash had told her no less than a dozen times. So had literally everyone else in that fucking bar.
And she was tired of it.
"Hey, Seraphine, right?" a woman's voice called out to her. Sera was roused from her stormcloud of thought, turning around to see a familiar face.
"Hey," she responded, smiling warmly. "Amanda, right?" She shifted the weight of her bag a little on her shoulder, walking towards the brunette that stood about ten feet away.
"Mandy, but who's keeping count?" she answered. "It's late, what are you doing out still?"
Seraphine's smile faded a little. "I just got off work - and I appreciate the concern, but I'm fine on my own." Of course.
"Hey," Mandy said holding up her hands, "no judgment here. I'm avoiding supervision myself," she admitted. In her pocket, her phone had finally found itself turned
off, after a cryptic text to Tucker that she was going to "figure it out", referring to the solution for his problems. Tucker, of course, had asked repeatedly what the fuck
that had meant, but Mandy had a plan A and a plan B. And she was looking right at plan A. "Ever since I came back, my brother has been totally up my ass. At first, it was okay, but now, it's like I can't go five minutes without someone wanting to know if I'm okay."
Seraphine's relaxed a little, and sighed. "Boy, can I relate," she said, and she meant it. "It's like they think you're made of - "
"Glass," Mandy finished.
"Yeah... exactly," Sera said. "Hey, listen - do you want to hang out? I know it's weird and we only just met the other day, but you're the only person who hasn't acted like I'm some sort of circus freak, and honestly it's refreshing." She laughed, embarrassed. "I feel like an idiot asking if you want to like, be friends."
Mandy smiled, and it was large - maybe too large, but Seraphine didn't notice. "It's fine, I get it. And I'd love to. Do you want to get a drink? Do you drink? Are you
old enough to drink?" She turned up her charm just a little, despite not really needing to. It was just a warm up, really. She liked to get limber before a good old-fashioned hunt.
"Yes, I'm old enough to drink. I'm going to be twenty-five in a few days, actually. Don't let the face fool you, I'm older than I look." And, unexpectedly, she held her hand out to Mandy. "I know a place - a
normal place. No magic, no fae, and most importantly, no
chaperones."
Mandy took her hand. "Alright," she said with a grin. "I'm in." And, hand in hand, giggling like schoolgirls, the duo walked down the street to the after-hours dive bar that Seraphine liked to go to. She'd never taken anyone else there before, actually - Mandy would be the first - and Mandy
knew that.
